The Empire State Building is one of the most iconic along Manhattan’s skyline and now it could become one of the greenest on the island. The building opened in 1931 and over the last 79 years the skyline has certainly changed but the 1,454 foot tall building has always stood above its peers.
In 2006 the building was acquired by Malkin Holdings who has since embarked on a large scale revitalization to restore the building and in the process retrofit it with new energy saving systems that could reduce the building’s total energy use by up to 40 percent. This is important because 80 percent of Manhattan’s energy use is the result of buildings and many of the boroughs older buildings are major contributors because of leaks and the lack of design considerations related to energy use.
